University of Minho

Since its creation in 1973, the University of Minho has been at the centre of an innovative project addressing the different facets of university intervention: education, research, organizational and social intervention. UMinho has around 19,000 students enrolled in study programs that cover most academic areas.

The University campuses, together with its other main physical infrastructures, are situated in Braga and Guimarães. These cities, anchored by a very rich historic inheritance involving the peninsular people and the founding of the Portuguese nation, knew how to defy the challenges posed by modernity and knowledge. Braga and Guimarães are, therefore, reference points for the Minho identity that the University proudly embraces and from which it presents itself to the world as a place of multiculturalism and multilinguism.

The great project of knowledge that constitutes the University of Minho is daily built on this foundation. This is a perpetually unfinished venture which all the academy is invited to join, including former students and all those who regard themselves as agents of knowledge and of a development model based on ethics and creativity.

Guimarães

Guimarães is a historical city that played a leading role in the foundation of Portugal in the 12th century. Its historical centre has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Cultural Heritage. Its streets and monuments bring history back to life and captivate its visitors.

The municipality of Guimarães (the city and its surroundings) has a population of around 160,000 inhabitants. It is located in the District of Braga, in the northwest region of Portugal.
